SMARTER Updates - April 2025

Greetings from the SMARTER team! Our project, funded by NIEHS and initiated in 2024, is developing community-driven, shared, generalizable metadata and data management tools that support reproducible exposure health research. Sensor metadata is a major focus.

What do researchers need from a sensor library?

We’re working to find out - and ensure that we’re meeting those needs. We interviewed a small group of exposure health researchers to better understand their needs, preferences and pain points in using sensors for exposure health research. We’re currently preparing the findings for publication.

In the meantime, we identified types of information that align with researchers’ needs for potential inclusion in the SMARTER/ EHIE metadata repository. The Expert Panel reviewed the list and provided recommendations on their prioritization in the software development process.

During early 2025, we published our Sensor Common Metadata Specification, v. 2.0 for public comment. In an April meeting of our Expert Panel, we reviewed these comments for potential integration into the next version. Thank you for your input!

Meet up with us at ISES 2025!

This summer, we are headed to the ISES-IEEE 2025 meeting in Atlanta, GA to exchange new findings and innovations with the exposure health research community. Several members of our team, including Drs. Ram Gouripeddi, Mollie Cummins, & Fatemah Shah will be presenting work from SMARTER.

Air Quality: Science for Solutions 2025

In March, our team attended the annual Air Quality: Science for Solutions meeting, hosted by Utah State University, alongside other exposure health researchers from the Intermountain West and beyond. Ms. Leela Sowmya Jandhyala presented the poster “Metadata-centric Approaches for Incorporating Sensors into Exposure Health Informatics Ecosystems“.

At the Western Institute of Nursing conference in Spokane, Washington, PhD student Ms. Sunho Im presented our latest research on automating metadata discovery.

Welcome to the team, Dr. Fatemah Shah!

A warm welcome to Dr. Fatemah Shah, who joined our team earlier this year in the role of Informatics Scientist. Dr. Fatemeh Shah-Mohammadi is a Research Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah, specializing in Clinical Data Science and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Dr. Shah-Mohammadi focuses on developing and applying computational methods to extract and structure valuable insights from unstructured text. Her research integrates machine learning, NLP, and biomedical informatics to improve the analysis of unstructured texts and optimize predictive modeling in healthcare settings.
